Patrick Xuewen Chen was admitted into LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in 1980. He was twenty-six years old, half a year older than the prescribed admission age. Allowed by Dean Zhang Wang, Patrick was admitted as an exception due to outstanding academic records. Throughout his college life, his classmates viewed him as a leader. He went to bed at three o'clock in the morning and got up at four o'clock. “God helps those who help themselves”. Through his dedication and determination, Patrick was elected to stay the school to teach upon graduation. Almost all his graduation works were published in art journals. His graduation thesis was "The visual communication induction of special form”. Here “special” means different, creative, and most importantly, change. This theory and philosophy deeply influenced his later artistic creation.

Teaching at the school he graduated from has been Patrick’s dream. It’s an environment with the best art resources and fosters rich artistic creation. But he wasn’t content. He continued to strive and thrive. In 1993, he was promoted to Associate Professor out of exception, the youngest at the school at the time.

In addition to teaching, he also devoted himself to the creation of airbrush painting art. He published two books, “Airbrush Painting Design” and “Airbrush Painting”. He pioneered both freehand airbrush and the use of cloud-shaped block templates, straightened out the historical origin of airbrush art, expanding the Chinese and world art history.

Xinhua Publishing House, Liaoning Fine Arts Publishing House and Heilongjiang Fine Arts Publishing House and other publishers have put Patrick's airbrush art in calendars form and sold to thousands of households. His art became famous instantly and many publishing houses thought after his works. He led the “The Systematic Study of Airbrushing Design” project, which won the first prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award in Liaoning province, with a special recognition from The Ministry of Culture for his contributions to the advancement of cultural science and technology.

In 1991, CCTV and Liaoning television set a special film, “Color wind and mist” first brought Patrick’s work onto the big screen. In 1992, Central Studio of News Reels Production filmed the movie “Patrick’s Airbrush Painting Art”. This led to him being recognized as “the Number One brush” in the field of airbrushing in China.

Airbrush has the ability to enrich the aesthetic style and visual impact of paintings. As a result, Patrick continued to incorporate airbrush into his later new color ink series works. Spraying, dyeing and “hard edge schema” are the double construction and integration of traditional and modern expression techniques, and this “special” visual element has been successfully highlighted. As soon as these new works were listed, the gallery and the collectors fell in love with them. His works were invited to numerous shows and exhibitions around the world. They were also collected by collectors in China, Singapore, Japan, Canada, the United States, Russia, France and Hong Kong and Taiwan regions.

This new style of painting was published by Liaoning Fine Arts Publishing House, “Patrick’s New Modern Ink”. Patrick and his works are also adapted in “New realistic painting”, which edited by Deng Fuxing, a famous art critic.  Patrick is also very successful in the field of design. His interior design, advertising design, and graphic design projects have won many awards in China. In 1990s, he first proposed a theoretical model of surreal painting composition in Chinese graphic design and artistic creation. He wrote the book of “Surreal Painting Composition” and introduced the reverse thinking mode into teaching. He is often heralded as the founder of Chinese surreal art.

In 2000, Patrick and his family immigrated to Canada, a completely unfamiliar place. Despite many challenges, he still works hard and has won the Fall Home Show Award for best display design shortly after settled in Canada. This is the first time a Chinese immigrant in Canada had such honor. He is also the founder of the fine arts school – Dian Shi Arts Centre, which has been widely recognized as the signature brand of art education in Canada.

Teaching and creating, are the way he chose to live in North America. His works were adapted in the “100 Artists 100 Paintings”, and he was selected as the one hundred outstanding artists in the “International Artist” annual global competition. He was invited to a segment on the Canadian Talentvision TV to showcase his art school. Now Patrick is a professional artist and educator, frequently launches new art works, attracting the attention of collectors.

陳學文80年考入中國魯迅美術學院。那一年,他二十六歲,比規定的考學年齡超了半年。據說時任院長張旺指示,成績優秀破格錄取。後來他成了這屆的老大哥。四年的大學生活,同學這樣戲稱他們的老班長,淩晨三點鐘睡覺,四點鐘起床。天道酬勤,終有收獲。後來他成為留校任教的不二人選。幾乎所有的畢業作品都被刊登在美術專業刊物上。畢業論文:《特異構成形式的視覺傳達感應》,特異就是不同、求新、求變,這一理論一直在深深的影響到他日後的藝術創作。

留在學校教學是陳學文的夢想,這裏有最好的藝術資源,有豐厚的藝術創作土壤。留校的他並未停止腳步,九三年破格晉升為副教授,成為魯迅美術學院教齡最短的副教授。

他邊教學,邊創作,潛心研究噴畫造型藝術。出版了《噴畫造型藝術》《噴畫》兩本專著。他首次建構了徒手噴畫和模板遮擋噴畫架上繪畫新模式,提出了自由模板遮擋和雲尺遮擋噴畫造型論,理順了噴畫藝術的歷史源流,展擴了中國及世界美術史的內容和上限年代。

中國新華出版社、遼寧美術出版社、黑龍江美術出版社等多家出版單位,先後將陳學文的噴畫藝術以掛歷為載體的形式,走進千家萬戶。一時洛陽紙貴,出版社約稿不斷。由他主持的《噴畫造型藝術系統工程研究》榮獲遼寧省科技進步一等獎,文化部特別表彰:在促進文化科學技術進步中做出重大貢獻。

1991年中國中央電視臺、遼寧電視臺拍攝專題片——《七彩風霧》,介紹陳學文繪畫藝術。1992年中國新聞電影制片廠拍攝新聞電影——《陳學文噴畫藝術》。一時間陳學文名聲大噪,被譽為中國噴筆畫壇“第一支筆”。

噴畫豐富了藝術家架上繪畫的創作手段及人們的視覺藝術的審美樣式。陳學文也將這一視覺樣式融匯到他日後的新彩墨系列作品創作中。噴、染、“硬邊圖式”将傳統、現代表達技法雙重構築、整合,成功凸顯這一“特異”的視覺元素。作品一出便受到畫廊及收藏家們的青睞。作品被邀出國辦個展、聯展,並被中國、新加坡、日本、加拿大、美國、俄羅斯、法國及港臺地區等收藏家收藏。

遼寧美術出版社出版了這一新的繪畫樣式,《陳學文彩墨創意》。陳學文及作品也被編入著名美術評論家鄧福星主編的中國當代美術系列——《新寫實繪畫卷》。陳學文在設計領域也頗有建樹,室內設計、廣告設計、平面設計、每每在中國多次榮獲大獎。二十世紀九十年代首次在中國平面設計及藝術創作中提出超然想象構成理論模式,著有《超然想象構成》一書,並將這一逆向思維模式引入教學中,被稱為“中國超然想象構成理論模式的奠基人”。

2000年陳學文全家移民來到了加拿大,一個完全陌生的地方。他依然努力前行,第二年便摘得Fall Home Show 最佳展示設計獎的桂冠。這也是加拿大華人移民史上得此殊榮的第一人。創辦了美術學校——點石畫苑。百年樹人為藝謀,一路走來,點石畫苑成為加拿大美術教育的品牌。

授業、解惑、創作是他在北美選擇的生存方式。作品被編入《100 Artists 100 Paintings》畫冊中,入圍《International Artist》美術期刊年度環球賽季一百名傑出藝術家。被邀加拿大城市電視臺專題片拍攝——陳學文和他的點石畫苑,獲加拿大新楓采藝術獎提名獎。入典全球華人風雲榜。現為職業畫家、教育家的陳學文每年都推出新的美術作品,吸引著收藏家們的關註。
